Destination Pre Wedding Photography Edinburgh

Edinburgh Pre Wedding Photography in Scotland

Following a very cold and snowy pre wedding photography session in the Yorkshire Dales National Park with Raphael and Emily, we drove up to Scotland for the next part of this engagement session in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is such an amazing location for a destination pre wedding photography shoot as there is such a variety of stunning locations to photograph in within such a short space. We began the session in the grounds around Edinburgh Castle before moving to the famous Princes Street area and then breaking for an outfit change and making our way up to Calton Hill which offers some amazing sunset views over the city.

Despite the cold we were treated to an amazing sunset and we couldn't have been in a more perfect location. Here are a few images from this Edinburgh pre wedding session and you can view some of this amazing couples Yorkshire Dales engagement photography here.

Destination pre wedding photography in Edinburgh Scotland by Nick Rose Photography

Edinburgh is bursting with character and charm – the perfect canvas for a memorable pre wedding shoot. Whether you’re after historic architecture, sweeping views, or a romantic natural setting, the Scottish capital has plenty to offer. Here are ten of the best locations in Edinburgh to consider when planning your pre wedding photo session.

The Best Locations in Edinburgh for Pre Wedding Photography

1. Calton Hill

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic spots. With its mix of monuments and panoramic cityscapes, it offers a dramatic backdrop that really sets the scene. The soft glow of sunrise or sunset can add a magical touch to your photos. It’s a great blend of urban and natural elements.

2. Arthur’s Seat

Nature lovers will adore Arthur’s Seat. As the highest point in the city, this ancient volcano gives you breathtaking views and a rugged setting. It’s ideal for a dramatic, outdoor vibe. A tip here is to plan your session for early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh shadows. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes—it does involve a little hike! Plus, the natural surroundings really help capture those intimate, candid moments.

3. The Royal Mile

A stroll down the Royal Mile is a must in Edinburgh. This historic stretch, lined with cobbled streets and centuries-old architecture, offers a charming urban backdrop. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a mix of history and romance. You’ll find quaint alleyways, hidden courtyards, and architectural details that tell a story, all of which add personality to your photos.

4. Edinburgh Castle (and its Surroundings)

Even if you can’t step inside the castle during your shoot, Edinburgh Castle’s impressive façade is a dramatic backdrop on its own. Alternatively, finding a spot nearby that offers a clear view can ensure your images capture its majestic presence. It’s iconic Scottish imagery that blends history with romance, creating strong, timeless compositions.

5. Princes Street Gardens

For a peaceful escape right in the heart of the city, Princes Street Gardens offers manicured lawns and beautiful floral displays with the castle peeking in the background. This location is a brilliant mix of urban excitement and natural beauty. Consider an early morning session for those calm, uncrowded shots or play with the interplay between structured gardens and the wild castle views. Seasonal blooms here can add a lovely pop of colour too.

6. Dean Village

Tucked away in the midst of the city is Dean Village—a hidden gem with its cobbled streets, charming bridges, and quaint architecture. This serene, storybook setting is ideal for intimate moments. You might use the historic waterwheel or the stone bridges as focal points in your photos. The soft light filtering through the trees can also bring out a wonderfully natural and romantic feel.

7. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

For couples who love nature, the Royal Botanic Garden provides lush backdrops filled with colourful blooms, ancient trees, and serene water features. No matter the season, this location is always a treat—from spring’s soft pastels to autumn’s rich, warm colours. Just check the garden’s schedule before your shoot in case of any seasonal restrictions. It’s perfect for capturing soft, romantic photos with a touch of natural elegance.

8. New Town – Charlotte Square & Beyond

New Town’s elegant Georgian architecture, particularly around Charlotte Square, brings a touch of style and sophistication to your shoot. The wide streets and ornate building facades create a timeless, chic atmosphere. This location offers a balanced mix of urban sophistication and historical charm, giving you plenty of backdrops to play with—from expansive streets to more intimate alleys.

9. Stockbridge

If you’re after a relaxed, bohemian vibe, Stockbridge is an excellent choice. This charming neighbourhood is full of independent boutiques, cosy cafés, and a lively weekend market. Its village feel lends a warm, personal touch to your photos. Expect to see colourful doorways, creative murals, and plenty of opportunities for candid moments that capture the local ambience perfectly.

10. Portobello Beach

For a touch of seaside charm, Portobello Beach won’t disappoint. Although Edinburgh is renowned for its urban and historic sites, this sandy stretch by the sea provides a refreshing, laid-back setting. The gentle sound of the waves can make a serene backdrop, and shooting during golden hour along the beach creates a beautiful, natural glow. It’s ideal for capturing playful, informal shots.

Edinburgh offers such a diverse range of settings that it’s easy to find a location that suits your style. When planning your pre wedding shoot, think about the personality of your relationship and the story you want your photos to tell. Mixing a few of these locations can bring out different aspects of your love story and add a lot of variety to your wedding shoot.
