STORMY DAWN OVER ALCATRAZ

Storm Clouds over Alcatraz in San Francisco

I was up at 5am the morning I arrived in San Francisco and it was pretty stormy. I thought I’d take a chance that it might clear up and headed out to try and grab a few pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge hoping that the sun would break through. As I drove down towards the water there was a bit of a break in the clouds and I captured this just as the light began to come through behind Alcatraz.

A Photographer’s Guide to San Francisco: 10 Must-Visit Spots

San Francisco, the iconic city by the bay, offers a treasure trove of photographic opportunities for photographers and is one of my favourite locations for a diverse range of images. With its impressive cityscapes, sweeping bridges, distinct neighborhoods, and natural landscapes, there's incredible backdrops to be captured at every corner. Here are ten of the best places to photograph in San Francisco that are worth visiting as a photographer.

1. Golden Gate Bridge

No trip to San Francisco is complete without capturing the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. Vista Point in Marin County and the Golden Gate Overlook provide stunning views of the bridge. For a different perspective, visit Fort Point, located right under the bridge, or Marshall’s Beach for a tranquil and sandy foreground.

2. Alcatraz Island

This infamous former prison sitting in the middle of San Francisco Bay offers dramatic, moody shots. Capture the haunting beauty of the cellblocks, or focus on the skyline of the city as a backdrop. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon provides the best lighting conditions.

3. Lombard Street

Known as the crookedest street in the world, Lombard Street, with its eight sharp turns, provides a unique and fun photographic perspective. Get the best shot from the bottom looking up, capturing the zig-zag pattern of the road flanked by lush green gardens.

4. Palace of Fine Arts

This architectural gem is a favourite among photographers for its intricate details and reflecting pool. With the stunning dome, columns, and serene lagoon filled with swans, there are numerous angles to capture this monument's beauty. The site is especially magical at night when it's beautifully lit.

5. Chinatown

With its vibrant colours, historic lanterns, bustling markets, and traditional Chinese architecture, San Francisco’s Chinatown, the oldest in North America, offers an abundance of compelling shots. Don’t miss the Dragon Gate at the entrance to Chinatown on Grant Avenue and Bush Street.

6. Painted Ladies

The row of Victorian houses known as the Painted Ladies is an iconic sight in San Francisco. The view from Alamo Square Park is classic, allowing for the contrast of these historical homes with the modern skyline in the background.

7. Twin Peaks

For a panoramic view of the city, head to Twin Peaks. From this vantage point, photographers can capture an expansive view of the city below, including Market Street cutting a path through the city, and the glittering bay beyond.

8. Sutro Baths and Lands End

The ruins of Sutro Baths and the nearby Lands End provide breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. With its rugged coastline, labyrinth, and the vast expanse of the sea, this place is perfect for dramatic landscape photography, especially at sunset.

9. Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39

This lively area offers countless photo opportunities. From colourful crab stands and historic ships at Fisherman’s Wharf to the raucous sea lions at Pier 39, there's always something to capture. Don't miss the chance to photograph the iconic San Francisco cable cars as they pass through the area.

10. Muir Woods

Just a short drive from the city, Muir Woods National Monument offers an enchanting forest of towering redwoods. Capture the play of light and shadow through these ancient trees, or try your hand at macro photography with the park’s diverse flora and fauna.
