A Portuguese and Sikh Wedding in London

I love seeing different cultures come together for weddings and Luis and Gunita's Sikh wedding ceremony in London brought together two very different families for the most amazing wedding.

Part one of Luis and Gunita's wedding was the religious Sikh ceremony that took place at Gunita's family home in London. The day was perfectly planned thanks to the talented Parita Patel at Rishtaa Weddings and Events and it was a truly magical event.

Luis was lucky enough to share his wedding day with the Euro 2016 football finals and his beloved Portugal managed to win the final making the day even more special.

It was important for Gunita's to share the day with her dog Ticus and having the ceremony at home meant that this was possible and Ticus played a very important part in helping Gunita get ready!

After the ceremony, the weather cleared perfectly, and we were able to get outside for some outdoor photographs in the most perfect setting. Here are a few images from this stunning Sikh wedding in London.

You can view the second part of this wedding, which took place at the Institute of Directors at 116 Pall Mall in London, by clicking here.

Sikh Wedding Ceremonies at Home: A Unique and Intimate Experience

Sikh wedding ceremonies, or Anand Karaj, are known for their deep spiritual significance, vibrant traditions, and strong sense of community. While these ceremonies traditionally take place in a Gurdwara, some couples choose to hold them at home. Having photographed many Sikh weddings, I’ve found that these at-home celebrations carry a unique charm that’s impossible to replicate elsewhere.

Why Choose an At-Home Sikh Wedding Ceremony?

There’s something incredibly personal about hosting such a monumental event in the heart of your family’s home. It creates a cosy and familiar atmosphere, and every corner of the house becomes part of the love story.

  • Deep emotional connection: A home ceremony often feels more intimate, as every moment happens in a space filled with personal history and cherished memories.

  • Customisation: Families have the flexibility to adapt the space, creating a unique backdrop for the couple’s big day. From gardens decorated with colourful fabrics to traditional indoor setups, every detail reflects the family’s vision.

  • Closer bonds: With a smaller guest list, the celebration fosters deeper connections. You can truly feel the love and support from those present.

The Sacredness of an At-Home Anand Karaj

Even though it’s at home, the ceremony’s spiritual essence remains unchanged. The sacred scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib, are brought into the house with great respect, and the traditional prayers, hymns, and rituals take place with the same devotion as they would in a Gurdwara.

The four Laavaan—symbolising the stages of a couple’s spiritual union—become even more profound in this intimate setting. The couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib in the presence of family and close friends, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere.

What Makes At-Home Sikh Weddings So Special?

Photographing these ceremonies is always a joy. Here are a few reasons why they stand out:

  • Personal touches: From handmade decorations to family heirlooms, every detail tells a story.

  • Unmatched warmth: The closeness of family members often leads to more heartfelt moments, and it’s beautiful to capture those raw emotions.

  • Unique settings: Homes provide opportunities for creative photography, whether it’s a portrait under a blooming tree in the garden or a candid shot in a beautifully decorated living room.

Things to Keep in Mind

If you’re considering hosting an at-home Sikh wedding, here are some practical tips:

  • Plan ahead: Ensure there’s enough space for guests, the Guru Granth Sahib, and the ceremony itself.

  • Work with professionals: Decorators, caterers, and photographers familiar with Sikh weddings can help bring your vision to life.

  • Respect the traditions: The sanctity of the Anand Karaj is paramount, so work closely with your family and priest to ensure everything is done with proper reverence.

FAQs About At-Home Sikh Weddings

Is it allowed to have a Sikh wedding at home?

Yes, a Sikh wedding can take place at home as long as the Guru Granth Sahib is present, and the ceremony is conducted respectfully and according to Sikh traditions.

What are the benefits of hosting an Anand Karaj at home?

At-home ceremonies provide a more intimate and personal experience. They also allow for greater flexibility in customisation and often make family members feel more connected to the event.

How do you prepare your home for a Sikh wedding?

Start by creating a clean and serene space for the Guru Granth Sahib and the main ceremony. Work with decorators to set up the area beautifully, ensuring adequate seating for guests and a comfortable space for the couple to perform the rituals.

Sikh weddings are always magical, but there’s something truly unforgettable about experiencing one at home. The blend of tradition, love, and personal touches creates memories that last a lifetime—and as a photographer, it’s an honour to capture those moments. If you’re considering an at-home wedding, embrace the intimacy and beauty it offers. It might just be the perfect way to start your journey together.
