Destination Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Skogafoss Iceland

Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Skogafoss and Vik, Iceland

The last day of Randy and Corene's pre-wedding photography shoot in Iceland was filled with lots more driving, exploring and stunning scenery. We began the long drive back towards Reykjavik with stops by the dramatic waterfall at Skogafoss and the beautiful black sand beaches of Vik.

Skogafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and the flat terrain leading up to the waterfall makes it a perfect backdrop for pre-wedding and engagement photographs. I have previously photographed weddings at Skogafoss in Iceland so knew the treat that we were in for and the waterfall did not disappoint.

The black sand beach at Vik is consistently named as one of the top 10 beaches on earth and the volcanic black rock that creates the dark sand is one of the most unique and impressive locations for pre-wedding photography. We had so much fun here and despite a rogue wave putting me knee-deep in icy cold water, we managed to spend a few hours exploring the area and capturing beautiful images of this amazing couple.

If you haven't seen the images from the first couple of days then you can check out some of the pre wedding photographs from Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon here

Planning Your Pre-Wedding Shoot in Iceland's South: Skogafoss and Vik

Heading to Iceland for a pre-wedding shoot? You're in for a treat, especially if you're eyeing the southern part of the island. Skogafoss and Vik are two spots that shouldn't be missed. Here's a straightforward guide to help you nail that dream shoot.

Skogafoss and Vik: What to Expect

  • Skogafoss is a massive waterfall that's not just about the water; it's the dramatic scenery that makes your photos pop. Think epic.

  • Vik is known for its black sand beaches and has an entirely different vibe – it's quieter but equally stunning.

Tips for a Smooth Shoot:

  • Timing: Early morning or late afternoon is best. You get soft light and fewer photo bombers.

  • Weather: It's unpredictable. Bring layers and be ready for anything.

  • Outfits: Choose contrast. Bright colours or white pop against the dark backgrounds.

  • Local Photographer: They know the best spots and times. Worth considering.

Top Locations for a Pre-Wedding Shoot in Iceland

Here's a mix of popular and lesser-known spots for incredible pre-wedding photos:

  1. Skogafoss: Big waterfall, big drama.

  2. Vik's Black Sand Beach: Moody and romantic.

  3. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon: Icebergs and blue water make it surreal.

  4. Reynisfjara: Besides Vik, famous for its sea stacks and basalt columns.

  5. Thingvellir National Park: Not just for "Game of Thrones" fans; it's historically and visually rich.

  6. Seljalandsfoss: You can walk behind this waterfall, which is pretty cool for photos.

  7. Kirkjufell Mountain: Picture-perfect mountain, especially with the northern lights.

  8. Diamond Beach: Ice on black sand looks as cool as it sounds.

  9. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon: Looks like a fairy tale setting.

  10. The Blue Lagoon: Not in the south, but iconic and can add a different vibe to your shoot.

Making It Work

  • Plan but be flexible: Have a plan, but be ready to change it based on the weather.

  • Stay Present: Enjoy the moment, even if it's cold or windy. It makes for better photos.

  • Respect Nature: Stick to paths and follow local advice to keep Iceland beautiful.
